What PickWell is, who it is for, and exactly how a product earns a place on a shortlist — including what disqualifies one and how the site is paid for.

What PickWell is

PickWell is an independent shortlist desk for people shopping on Amazon. We research products, publish a short list per category with the reasoning attached, and send you to Amazon to check the live price and buy. We hold no stock, take no payment for placement, and never handle your money.

Who it is for

It is for the shopper who knows roughly what they need — a monitor arm, headphones for commuting, a kettle that will not die in a year — and wants the field narrowed to a few defensible options with the trade-offs spelled out. It is not a price-comparison engine and not a catalogue.

What problem it solves

Amazon's results page is optimised for breadth. Type in a category and you get thousands of listings, many of them near-identical, ordered by signals that are not about whether the product suits you. Narrowing that to three or four options is work, and it is the same work for everyone who searches. We do it once and publish the result.

How a product earns a place

1. Start from the real field

We begin with what people actually buy in a category, then cut it to the handful worth arguing about. A product nobody is choosing between is not a useful recommendation.

2. Read it against its rivals

Nothing is ranked in isolation. A product earns a place once it has been read against the two or three things you would otherwise be choosing between, on the points that separate them rather than the points the marketing emphasises.

3. Read the complaint tail

Specification sheets describe a new product. Owner reviews describe it after six months. We look for the complaint that keeps repeating, because that is the one you will meet.

4. Write down who should skip it

Every write-up names who the product is wrong for. That part is usually more useful than the praise, and it is the fastest way to rule something out.

5. Revisit when it changes

Models get replaced and quietly revised. A shortlist that is never re-checked stops being a shortlist, so entries are removed when they stop deserving their place.

What disqualifies a product

• A pattern of recent complaints about the same failure.
• A listing that merges several different products under one set of reviews.
• Specifications that cannot be confirmed anywhere except the seller's own copy.
• A price that only makes sense during a sale event.

How the site is paid for

Telling us we are wrong

Specifications age and products change. If a pick no longer deserves its place, or a figure does not match the listing, send a correction. Corrections get made and credited rather than quietly buried.
