Mesh Wi-Fi Without the Guesswork: What to Buy for a Real House

Coverage figures on the box are measured in conditions your house does not have. Here is what genuinely determines whether a mesh system fixes your dead spots: backhaul, node placement and honest expectations.
Mesh systems are sold on a single number: square metres of coverage. That number is produced in a large open space with nothing in it, which is the opposite of a house. Your house has plasterboard, brick, a staircase, a bathroom mirror, foil-backed insulation, and a router shoved behind the television because that is where the socket is.
None of that appears on the box, and all of it decides whether the system works. Here is how to choose one without relying on the marketing.
First: are you sure you need mesh?
Mesh solves one problem — coverage across a distance the router cannot reach. It does not solve slow broadband, and it does not solve a single stubborn dead spot behind a thick wall. Before spending anything, try three free things:
- Move the router. Central and high beats tucked in a corner at floor level. A metre of height and a metre out from a wall can be worth more than an extra node.
- Check the actual line speed. Run a wired speed test at the router. If the line delivers 40Mbps, no amount of mesh will make a device see 300.
- Count your walls. Signal loss is roughly per-obstacle. Two plasterboard walls are nothing; one solid brick chimney breast is a wall of concrete as far as 5GHz is concerned.
If, after that, there is still a room where video calls fall over, mesh is the right purchase.
Backhaul is the whole game
Backhaul is how the nodes talk to each other. Everything else about a mesh system is secondary to this, and it is the specification most buyers skip.
Wired backhaul
If you can run Ethernet between node locations — or already have coax or powerline you can press into service — do it. A wired node gives every device in that room the full speed of the link, with no wireless hop tax. Even one wired node in the worst room transforms a system.
Dedicated wireless backhaul
Tri-band systems reserve one radio band purely for node-to-node traffic. That keeps your devices off the same airspace the nodes are using to talk to each other. It costs more and it is worth it whenever wiring is impossible.
Shared wireless backhaul
Cheap dual-band mesh kits share one band for both jobs. Every hop roughly halves the throughput available to your devices. They still work — a halved connection in a room that previously had none is a clear win — but do not expect the headline speed anywhere except beside the main unit.
If you take one thing from this article: a two-node tri-band system will usually beat a three-node dual-band system in the same house, for the same money.
How many nodes
More nodes is not better. Each wireless hop costs speed, and nodes placed too far apart form a weak link that drags the whole system down. Place them so that each node still sees a strong signal from the one before it — roughly two-thirds of the way to the dead spot, not inside it.

Wi-Fi 6, 6E or 7?
Generational labels sell hardware, but the gains only appear if your devices support the same generation. A practical reading in 2026:
- Wi-Fi 6 is the sensible default. Cheap, mature, and handles a house full of devices well.
- Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6GHz band, which is empty in most neighbourhoods. Excellent as dedicated backhaul; short range through walls.
- Wi-Fi 7 matters most if you have a multi-gigabit line and recent client devices. On a 100 to 500Mbps connection it changes almost nothing you can feel.
Buy the generation that matches your broadband speed, not the one at the top of the range.
The boring details that decide daily life
- Ethernet ports per node. Two is common, one is annoying, and a games console plus a television in the same room means you will be buying a switch.
- WAN port speed. A 1Gb WAN port caps a faster line, no matter how good the wireless is.
- Subscriptions. Some systems put parental controls or security behind a monthly fee. Check before, not after.
- Cloud dependency. Some kits will not let you change a setting without their app and their servers. Decide whether you mind.
- Bridge mode. If you keep your provider's box, make sure the mesh can run without creating a second layer of network address translation.
What to ignore
Ignore the coverage area figure, the combined-speed number that adds every band together, and antenna counts. Ignore claims about the number of devices supported — the ceiling is real but nowhere near what a house generates.
After it arrives
Set it up, then spend twenty minutes walking the house with a signal-strength app and moving nodes half a metre at a time. Height helps. Line of sight through a doorway beats a shorter path through a wall. Cupboards, floors and the back of a television are all bad. That twenty minutes will do more than the next price bracket up would have.
